Remove C2PA Content Credentials

C2PA Content Credentials are file-level provenance data that can describe an asset's origin and edits. This free browser tool checks supported JPG, PNG, and WebP containers for a recognized embedded C2PA carrier and can apply the C2PA preset to create a copy without that carrier. Carrier detection is not cryptographic manifest validation. The lossless container path keeps the encoded image payload and dimensions unchanged; it also preserves ICC color, orientation, transparency, animation, and recognized author, copyright, license, attribution, and rights-holder fields. Removing Content Credentials does not remove a visible watermark or an invisible signal embedded in pixels, repair a damaged manifest, erase copies held elsewhere, or guarantee how another service will classify the image.

What this C2PA tool can remove

The tool works at the image-container level. It looks for supported C2PA-bearing segments or chunks in JPG, PNG, and WebP files and reports whether a supported carrier is found. When the C2PA preset runs, the output builder omits that recognized embedded carrier and updates the surrounding container bookkeeping required for the resulting file to remain valid.

A carrier match is not presented as cryptographic validation. A complete Content Credentials verifier may evaluate claim signatures, certificate chains, ingredient relationships, and external resources. This cleaner's narrower job is to identify and remove supported file-embedded carriers while accurately reporting what it could and could not parse.

How it works

How C2PA inspection and removal works

The free flow reads and rebuilds the file in the browser; it does not upload the image for processing.

    Select an authorized JPG, PNG, or WebP file and let the parser validate its basic container boundaries.

    Read the status carefully: a recognized carrier is not the same as a cryptographically verified manifest, and no supported carrier is not proof that no provenance exists.

    Run the fixed C2PA preset. Other metadata categories remain independent so a provenance action does not silently become a Full Metadata Reset.

    Build the output by copying retained container records and the original encoded image payload while omitting the supported carrier included by the preset.

    Review the clean report and download. If authenticity verification matters, check the new file with an appropriate C2PA verifier rather than relying on a filename or screenshot.

Metadata vs pixels

Content Credentials and pixel signals are different layers

C2PA binds provenance assertions to an asset through a manifest structure carried with or referenced by the file. Removing an embedded carrier changes that file's provenance layer. It does not reconstruct the image content and it cannot retract a manifest or asset copy already published elsewhere.

A pixel watermark is part of the visual signal itself, even when people cannot see it. Container-only C2PA removal leaves encoded pixels untouched, so any pixel-level signal remains. The result must not be described as undetectable, detector-certified, or cleared of every AI trace.

What is preserved

What remains in the cleaned file

For supported cleanup, the cleaner retains the JPEG entropy-coded scan, PNG image-data and animation chunks, or WebP image and animation payload. Width, height, ICC color profile, EXIF orientation, transparency, and animation timing are preserved by both the C2PA preset and Full Metadata Reset.

Recognized author, copyright, license, attribution, and rights-holder data is preserved by default. Ordinary EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC, prompt, and software fields are not removed merely because the C2PA preset is active. A confirmed Full Metadata Reset may remove recognized rights and provenance metadata, but not the technical image data or pixels preserved above.

Limitations

What the C2PA result does not prove

C2PA can use multiple asset formats, remote resources, evolving specifications, or data that is malformed, fragmented, or unfamiliar to this parser. An unreadable status is not the same as absent. The tool cannot promise that every credential is discovered, that an external manifest disappears, or that a publisher will remove its own provenance label.

Removing a provenance record may be inappropriate or unlawful when it conceals ownership, licensing, an edit history, evidence, or the source of third-party media. This tool is not for government or identity documents, financial records, certificates, legal evidence, fraud, impersonation, or evading platform safeguards.

Reproducible example

Test-fixture example: removing a PNG C2PA carrier

A deterministic synthetic PNG fixture isolates the container operation without using a customer's image or claiming a third-party detector result.

Input

  • A valid IHDR with fixed dimensions, a small ICC color-profile chunk, and fixed IDAT bytes
  • A supported C2PA carrier chunk containing non-production sample manifest bytes
  • An animation-control chunk and rights text used to verify that unrelated records survive

Change

  • The C2PA carrier chunk is excluded from the rebuilt chunk sequence.
  • Existing retained chunks are copied byte for byte in their original order.

Verification

  • The output chunk structure and checksums validate and the image dimensions match the input.
  • The concatenated IDAT bytes have the same hash, demonstrating no pixel re-encoding for this fixture.
  • The follow-up scan finds no supported embedded carrier and still finds the ICC, animation, and rights records.

FAQ

Questions about this tool

Is finding a C2PA carrier the same as verifying Content Credentials?

No. Carrier detection says supported bytes are present. Full verification can require signature, certificate, assertion, ingredient, and external-resource checks beyond this local cleaner's scope.

Does removal change the picture?

The supported container route copies the encoded image payload rather than rendering it again. The default preset and Full Metadata Reset both keep the pixel payload and dimensions unchanged.

Does this remove SynthID or another invisible watermark?

No. C2PA is file-level provenance data. A signal embedded in image pixels is a different layer and remains when the pixel payload is copied unchanged.

Can credentials reappear after I upload the image elsewhere?

A platform may attach new metadata or retain information about an earlier upload. This tool only changes the downloaded file produced in the current browser session.
